Metropolis (1927) by Fritz Lang is an example of Piranesi’s influence on the science fiction genre. Poster by Boris Bilinsky.
Piranesi and the Modern at the National Museum (until Jan 8) presents the Italian artist’s most famous works and explores his significance for art, architecture, film and photography in our own times. Works by Piranesi from over 250 years ago are displayed alongside those by artists such as Pablo Picasso and Robert Delaunay, the architects Le Corbusier and Rem Koolhaas and photographers and filmmakers such as Sergei Eisenstein. Piranesi’s influence even extended to Star Wars, with its design for the city of Coruscant.
