Visitors to the spectacular Czech capital can now visit not one, but two museums dedicated to one of the leading lights of the Art Nouveau movement, Alphone Mucha.
Joining the long established museum on Panska Street, a second Mucha Museum is now open in the sumptuous Savarin Palace – this one ‘official’ in that it is approved by the Mucha Foundation and supported by the artist’s family. (The use of the name ‘Mucha Museum’ is currently a legal matter.)
Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) was most famous for revolutionising poster design, particularly those commissioned by the French actress Sarah Bernhardt to promote her appearances. Mucha’s signature style – beautiful women, flowing hair, extravagant flowers and fanciful script – made him rich and famous and led to a vast range of merchandise, from calendars, biscuit tins and jewellery to cutlery, fabrics and even the entire exterior and interior of the Fouquet jewellery shop in Paris. mucha.eu
