Henri Matisse, Yellow Odalisque (detail), 1937
There is a double-header at the Barnes Foundation focusing on two pivotal figures in the history of modern art (until Jan 29). Modigliani Up Close shares new insights into the Italian artist’s working methods and materials showing how he constructed and composed his signature works. Also showing is Matisse in the 1930s, the first exhibition ever dedicated to this transformative decade in his art following a creative slump and prompted by the commission for a three-part mural, The Dance.
