Maurizio Cattelan, 'La nona ora (The Ninth Hour)'

Maurizio Cattelan: The Third Hand at the Moderna Museet (until Jan 12, 2025) includes several of the Italian artist’s most iconic works alongside pieces that he has chosen from the museum’s collection. Cattelan, one of the most irreverent artists of our times, uses satire, humour, provocation and seriousness to question the conventions of society in general and the art world in particular. The scrutiny of power and belief systems is a theme which runs through his entire body of work, while he leaves interpretations to the viewer. For example, in La nona ora (The Ninth Hour, pictured), showing Pope John Paul II struck down by a meteorite, Cattelan questions the power of religion over death. The title echoes the story of Christ, who at the “ninth hour” of his ordeal cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
